Welcome to our class! Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you like the reading for tomorrow, chapter 12 of Ways of the World. You do not need to post an entry this week, but feel free to write about the primary sources here if you like. The written documents are Spanish discussions of the Aztec and Inca Empires, while the visual sources are examples of European Renaissance art depicting the Islamic World. These date from the time when the Ottoman Empire was emerging as a serious threat to Europe. It is interesting to think about these representations of other cultures.

According to, Art of War, by Sun Tzu, the best victory is when an enemy gives up before any combat. Arguably the Aztecs so captivated by the Spanish show of force, disposition, and material possessions, did just that. Some historians suggest the Aztecs saw the Spanish conquistador Cortez as the second coming of their god of creation, Kukulcan. Viewing the Spanish arrival as apocalyptic the Aztecs could have gave little to no resistance, rendering victory for the Spanish absolute.
